What Is Was Like to Be Stationed in Guam on a Submarine Tender in the United States Navy

The first time I had seen Guam, was when the USS PROTEUS was coming back from the Philippines, when we were pulling it, it was beautiful. It looks a lot like Hawaii. I’ve been to Hawaii so many time I don’t remember.

What Is Was Like to Visit the Philippines While on a Navy Warship and Take a Port of Call

I was happy, when I finally learned that I would be meeting up with my ship, it was going to be pulling into the Philippines. I was going to fly from San Diego, to Manila, and then take a van down the country, about 200 miles where the ship was going to be tied up at. About 6 other guys, and me, were going to the Philippines on an Air Force cargo plane that was going that way.

What Is Was Like to Visit Hong Kong While on a Navy Warship and Taking a Liberty Call in Port

When we pulled the ship into Hong Kong harbor, it was amazing. There were so many boats everywhere in the water. There were Big boats, little boats, and it looked like most all of the boats were being lived on, by local people.

What It Was Like to Visit Singapore While on a Destroyer in the United States Navy

When we started arriving close to the coast of Singapore, we pulled the ship right up to the pier, and it was incredible parking the ship there. It was just like we got front row parking, right in the heart of town, next to a shopping district, with a lot of nice shops. Singapore is one of the cleanest, prettiest, safest feeling countries, I think I have ever been to, and I was able to see a lot of countries, and travel around the world, in 1986.

What Is Was Like to Visit British Columbia While Stationed on a Destroyer in the United States Navy

When our ship, the destroyer, pulled into British Columbia, we were in a very beautiful spot in the world. It was just like a picture post card, you would buy in a gift shop. I had the 4:00 am to 8:00 am watch as a roving patrol on the ship that morning.

What Is Was Like to Visit Mal Dives While Stationed on a Destoyer in the United States Navy

When we heard we were going to be going to a place called Mal Dives, no one really knew anything about the place? We did not know anyone that had been there, and we did not know what to expect really? Some of the guys looked it up on the map, and it looked just like a tiny place.

What Is Was Like to Visit Korea While Serving in the United States Navy As a Yeoman

When we pulled into Korea, we were able to pull the ship into Pusan, Korea first, and then we cruised over to Chin Hae, Korea. When we pulled into Korea, it was populated with a lot of boats everywhere. We had to anchor out, in the bay, and take the smaller boats, to shore.

What Is Was Like to Visit Japan While Stationed on a Destroyer in the United States Navy

The first time I went to Japan, we had pulled into Yokosuka, for a DC10 engine, change out. Our destroyer, believe it or not, actually had a key, that started the ship. The ship was equipped with four DC10 diesel engines.

What Is Was Like to Visit Malaysia While in the US Navy

When we got close to the coast of Malaysia, there were several small gun boats, or even a little bit bigger than that, that came out, and came directly at our destroyer. The guys on the deck, did not know what was going on, and we thought we might be attacked, or fired upon. One of the things you worry about the most, is a small boat, getting close, with short range weapons.
