To Conquer Mount Kinabalu

I have wanted to climb Mount Kinabalu in Sabah. Finally the opportunity arose and I boarded a flight to Kota Kinabalu with my other friends and an equal measure of excitement and trepidation. As ever, the flight was comfortable and timely, delivering us to Kota Kinabalu early in the afternoon with plenty of time to make the two-hour drive up to Kinabalu Park headquarters.

ATTRACTIONS NEARBY: These are the forts that keep the north east India alive. Beauty lives in Itanagar with the lush green valleys and the ancient forts in the northern region. This city has much importance in archaeology and also. There are also many earthquakes happening in this area around, and that’s also the reason many of the houses are made of wood. There are several places for shopping, visiting monuments and lots of traditional temples in and around Arunachal Pradesh. The sightseeing places are also in plenty, you can have a nice time during the entire tour of Itanagar.

AFS Expedition – Sea Lions, Turtles and Whales

Our speedboats carried us 3 hours out with dolphins and porpoises in tow. We anchored at a colony of 600 sea lions and donned wet suits. It was a thrilling and surreal experience to snorkel among them!

The Venomous Cuban Solenodon

Because of its tropical climate and the government’s conservation efforts, Cuba has many species of animals and reptiles whose population is recovering from near extinction. One of these is the Cuban Solenodon, a rodent that was thought to be wiped out by 1970. Luckily, a few were discovered in the mid 70’s and efforts to protect and increase its numbers have been successful though it is still rare.

Cuba is home to many beautiful plants, birds, mammals, insects, and reptiles but it also has a few of the rarest creatures on earth. One of these creatures is the Cuban Crocodile, a distinctive breed of crocodile which is found in only two small areas of the country and does not naturally inhabit any other area of the world.

One of the most fascinating birds on earth is found only in Cuba and a couple of the surrounding islands. The Bee Hummingbird, the smallest in the world at less than 2″ long and weighing less than an ounce, is lighter than a penny and comparable in size to a bumble bee! Most of the world’s hummingbirds are anywhere from 2.5″ to 8″ long.

Cuba has so many beautiful birds, many of them unavailable to see in their natural habitat anywhere else in the world. The Cuban government has made concerted efforts over the years to preserve wildlife habitats, even before the current environmental movement made it politically popular. Because of those efforts, Cuba has preserved much of its wildlife in the unspoiled, natural beauty in which it thrives.

Cubais a popular destination for birdwatchers and ornithologists due to its variety of species of birds. There are 368 species of birds there, of which only 25 are endemic (native) and 17 are globally threatened. Extinct birds that originated in Cuba include the Passenger Pigeon and the Cuban Red Macaw.
